PRAGUE -- Declaring the future of mankind at stake, President Obama on Sunday said all nations must strive to rid the world of nuclear arms and that the U.S. had a "moral responsibility" to lead because no other country has used one.

A North Korean rocket launch upstaged Obama's idealistic call to action, delivered in the capital of the Czech Republic, a former satellite of the Soviet Union. But Obama dismissed those who say the spread of nuclear weapons, "the most dangerous legacy of the Cold War," cannot be checked.

"This goal will not be reached quickly -- perhaps not in my lifetime," he told a cheering crowd of more than 20,000 in the historic square outside the Prague Castle gates. We "must ignore the voices who tell us that the world cannot change. We have to insist, 'Yes, we can.'"

Russia's Medvedev hails 'comrade' Obama

The UN will declare a global crisis do the the economy and global warming. They will say that the wealthy nations are not giving enough to the poor nations and their conditions are getting much worse. Russian planes again fly over U.S. Navy ships

You would think that this would be reported all over the news instead of CNN burying it on their website...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Russian military aircraft flew just 500 feet over two U.S. Navy ships this week as the ships participated in a joint military exercise with South Korea in the Sea of Japan, according to U.S. military officials.

On Monday, two Russian Ilyushin IL-38 maritime patrol aircraft, known as "Mays," overflew the U.S. aircraft carrier Stennis while it was in international waters in the Sea of Japan.

The Russian aircraft flew about 500 feet over the ship, lower than other flights the Russians have made over U.S. ships in the past year.

The USS Stennis was about 80 miles east of Pohang, South Korea, participating in the joint military exercise when the flyover occurred.

On Tuesday, the USS Blue Ridge, a lead command and control ship, and the Stennis were overflown by two Russian "Bear" long-range bombers multiple times, according to U.S. military officials.

The Bears overflew the ships at about 2,000 feet, officials said.

Levin: U.S. and Russia Should Unite Against Iran

WASHINGTON — If the United States and Russia set aside their differences on missile defense and began cooperating against Iran they could make a decisive difference in weakening Iran as a missile threat, a leading Senate Democrat said Monday.

Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, told a defense conference that missile defense will be at the center of a new set of security talks between Washington and Moscow and could become "a positive political tool" rather than an impediment to better U.S.-Russian relations.

Russia strongly opposes a plan that the Bush administratino crafted, and the Obama administration is reviewing, to place U.S. missile interceptors in Poland and an associated radar in the Czech Republic. The stated purpose is to defend Europe against an anticipated Iranian long-range missile threat.

Notably, Levin did not suggest that the Obama administration bargain away the Bush-era plan for extending U.S. missile defenses to eastern Europe. There has been speculation that President Barack Obama would offer to scrap that plan in return for Russian help in persuading Iran to end its nuclear program.

Levin argued instead for the start of U.S.-Russian cooperation on defenses against Iranian missiles.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - U.S. President Barack Obama has held talks with Mikhail Gorbachev, a spokesman for the former Soviet leader said on Monday, in the latest sign of Washington's efforts to "press the reset button" on ties with Russia.

Spokesman Konstantin Petrenko said Gorbachev met Obama and Vice President Joe Biden -- who coined the 'reset' phrase last month -- in Washington last Friday. He did not give any details of the discussion.

Bilateral ties worsened sharply last year, with the two countries at odds over NATO expansion, U.S. plans for a missile shield in Eastern Europe, and Russia's war with Georgia.

Visits by veteran politicians have been used by both sides to test the waters before Obama meets Russian President Dmitry Medvedev for the first time on April 1 in London on the eve of a G20 summit. A delegation led by former U.S. secretary of state Henry Kissinger visited Russia last week and met Medvedev.

Plus, Global warming would be a great way to strangle Western corporations with huge carbon taxes. This will give a major advantage to companies in Russia and China that do not have to abide by strict regulations at all.

Meanwhile, today is the first day of Spring in NYC and it is SNOWING. Why has this warming trend not reached my neighborhood yet? Kremlin to Pitch New Currency

The Russians smell blood and they are looking to undermine the dollar even further. The Kremlin published its priorities Monday for an upcoming meeting of the G20, calling for the creation of a supranational reserve currency to be issued by international institutions as part of a reform of the global financial system.

The International Monetary Fund should investigate the possible creation of a new reserve currency, widening the list of reserve currencies or using its already existing Special Drawing Rights, or SDRs, as a "superreserve currency accepted by the whole of the international community," the Kremlin said in a statement issued on its web site.

The SDR is an international reserve asset, created by the IMF in 1969 to supplement the existing official reserves of member countries.

The Kremlin has persistently criticized the dollar's status as the dominant global reserve currency and has lowered its own dollar holdings in the last few years. Both President Dmitry Medvedev and Prime Minister Vladimir Putin have repeatedly called for the ruble to be used as a regional reserve currency, although the idea has received little support outside of Russia.

Analysts said the new Kremlin proposal would elicit little excitement among the G20 members.

U.S. court sentences Russian arms smuggler to 22 years in prison

NEW YORK, March 7 (RIA Novosti) - An Armenian involved in smuggling Russian military arms to the United States has been given a 22-year sentence, the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York said in a press release.

Artur Solomonyan, 30, and another 17 members of his international criminal group held talks for about a year with an FBI agent, who posed as a "terrorist", on the sale of Russian-made grenade launchers, machine guns and portable surface-to-air missile systems.

Solomonyan and his accomplices were arrested as soon as the Federal Bureau of Investigation collected enough evidence to charge them with conspiring to smuggle arms.

The group's arrest in 2005 was widely covered by American media. According to an FBI representative's statement at the time, Solomonyan even offered the "terrorist" enriched uranium to make an attack on the New York City Subway. However, the verdict does not mention uranium.

The sentence to another two accomplices will be made public later in March, while the other group members were sentenced earlier.
