Russian general says U.S. may have planned satellite collision

MOSCOW, March 3 (RIA Novosti) - A collision between U.S. and Russian satellites in early February may have been a test of new U.S. technology to intercept and destroy satellites rather than an accident, a Russian military expert has said.

According to official reports, one of 66 satellites owned by Iridium, a U.S. telecoms company, and the Russian Cosmos-2251 satellite, launched in 1993 and believed to be defunct, collided on February 10 about 800 kilometers (500 miles) above Siberia.

However, Maj. Gen. (Ret.) Leonid Shershnev, a former head of Russia's military space intelligence, said in an interview published by the Moskovsky Komsomolets newspaper on Tuesday that the U.S. satellite involved in the collision was used by the U.S. military as part of the "dual-purpose" Orbital Express research project, which began in 2007.

Orbital Express was a space mission managed by the United States Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) and a team led by engineers at NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).

According to the DARPA, the program was "to validate the technical feasibility of robotic, autonomous on-orbit refueling and reconfiguration of satellites to support a broad range of future U.S. national security and commercial space programs."

Orbital Express was launched in March 2007 as part of the U.S. Air Force Space Test Program's STP-1 mission. It tested a prototype servicing satellite (ASTRO) and a surrogate next generation serviceable satellite (NextSat). The demonstration program met all the mission success criteria and was officially completed in July 2007.

Shershnev claims the U.S. military decided to continue with the project to "develop technology that would allow monitoring and inspections of orbital spacecraft by fully-automated satellites equipped with robotic devices."

The February collision could be an indication that the U.S. has successfully developed such technology and is capable of manipulating 'hostile satellites,' including their destruction, with a single command from a ground control center, the general said.

A United States naval taskforce has been ordered to hunt down weapons ships sent by Iran to rearm its Islamist ally Hamas in Gaza, The Sunday Times reported.

Quoting U.S. diplomatic sources, the British daily said that Combined Task Force 151, which is countering pirates in the Gulf of Aden, has been instructed to track Iranian arms shipments.

The intelligence community in Israel believes that Iran intends on rearming Hamas after the Israel Defense Forces' recent offensive in Gaza seriously depleted the Islamist militant group's arsenal.

Israel launched the 22-day offensive late last month against Hamas in Gaza to try to permanently halt years of militant rocket fire on growing numbers of Israelis and to halt the smuggling of arms that turned Hamas into a threat to much of southern Israel.

Last week, the U.S. military intercepted and searched an Iranian-owned ship that officials feared was carrying arms to Hamas, but two officials said it was unclear Thursday whether those suspicions were founded.

The Cypriot-flagged commercial vessel was tracked by a U.S. Navy ship in the Red Sea over the weekend, one official said. It was boarded and searched with the consent of the vessel's crew on Monday and Tuesday, said another.

The Sunday Telegraph also quoted "well briefed sources" as saying that a second arms smuggling route into Gaza has also been used by Tehran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guard has sent shipments through the Suez Canal into the Mediterranean to anchor off the Gaza coast, inside Egyptian territorial waters, where the Israel Navy is barred.

On Sunday, Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin told the cabinet that Hamas would resume smuggling arms into Gaza within a few months, despite Israel's destruction of many tunnels used for this purpose during the campaign.

A Russian Foreign Ministry official says the US troops in Iraq have deliberately rammed their vehicle into a convoy carrying Russian diplomats.

The incident took place as a group of US armored personnel carriers (APCs) was passing by the motorcade of Russian diplomats, the official said, AFP reported.

"Suddenly the lead APC sharply maneuvered and, passing our second and third cars in the far left lane, caught up with the lead car and intentionally struck it, trying to push it off the road," he added.

The Russian Foreign Ministry official, who refused to be named, described the incident as a hit-and-run saying the US vehicles drove away with some of the soldiers pointing their rifles at the Russians.

Several Russian personnel received injuries of various degrees as a result of the collision, he said.

The official, however, did not mention the time of the incident, but said the Russians had been driving from the Green Zone to Baghdad airport.

Moscow has called on Washington to conduct an investigation into the case, the official said adding that Russia reserves the right to press for compensation.

Russian analyst predicts decline and breakup of U.S.

MOSCOW, November 24 (RIA Novosti) - A leading Russian political analyst has said the economic turmoil in the United States has confirmed his long-held view that the country is heading for collapse, and will divide into separate parts.

Professor Igor Panarin said in an interview with the respected daily Izvestia published on Monday: "The dollar is not secured by anything. The country's foreign debt has grown like an avalanche, even though in the early 1980s there was no debt. By 1998, when I first made my prediction, it had exceeded $2 trillion. Now it is more than 11 trillion. This is a pyramid that can only collapse."

The paper said Panarin's dire predictions for the U.S. economy, initially made at an international conference in Australia 10 years ago at a time when the economy appeared strong, have been given more credence by this year's events.

When asked when the U.S. economy would collapse, Panarin said: "It is already collapsing. Due to the financial crisis, three of the largest and oldest five banks on Wall Street have already ceased to exist, and two are barely surviving. Their losses are the biggest in history. Now what we will see is a change in the regulatory system on a global financial scale: America will no longer be the world's financial regulator."

When asked who would replace the U.S. in regulating world markets, he said: "Two countries could assume this role: China, with its vast reserves, and Russia, which could play the role of a regulator in Eurasia."

Asked why he expected the U.S. to break up into separate parts, he said: "A whole range of reasons. Firstly, the financial problems in the U.S. will get worse. Millions of citizens there have lost their savings. Prices and unemployment are on the rise. General Motors and Ford are on the verge of collapse, and this means that whole cities will be left without work. Governors are already insistently demanding money from the federal center. Dissatisfaction is growing, and at the moment it is only being held back by the elections and the hope that Obama can work miracles. But by spring, it will be clear that there are no miracles."

He also cited the "vulnerable political setup", "lack of unified national laws", and "divisions among the elite, which have become clear in these crisis conditions."

He predicted that the U.S. will break up into six parts - the Pacific coast, with its growing Chinese population; the South, with its Hispanics; Texas, where independence movements are on the rise; the Atlantic coast, with its distinct and separate mentality; five of the poorer central states with their large Native American populations; and the northern states, where the influence from Canada is strong.

He even suggested that "we could claim Alaska - it was only granted on lease, after all."

On the fate of the U.S. dollar, he said: "In 2006 a secret agreement was reached between Canada, Mexico and the U.S. on a common Amero currency as a new monetary unit. This could signal preparations to replace the dollar. The one-hundred dollar bills that have flooded the world could be simply frozen. Under the pretext, let's say, that terrorists are forging them and they need to be checked."

When asked how Russia should react to his vision of the future, Panarin said: "Develop the ruble as a regional currency. Create a fully functioning oil exchange, trading in rubles... We must break the strings tying us to the financial Titanic, which in my view will soon sink."

Panarin, 60, is a professor at the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and has authored several books on information warfare.

US helicopters attack Syrian village

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) - Syria's state-run television and witnesses say U.S. military helicopters have attacked an area along the country's border with Iraq, causing casualties.

The report quoted unnamed Syrian officials and said the area is near the Syrian border town of Abu Kamal. It gave no other details on Sunday's attack.

Local residents told The Associated Press by telephone that two helicopters carrying U.S. soldiers raided the village of Hwijeh, 10 miles inside Syria's border, killing seven people and wounding five.

The U.S. military in Baghdad had no immediate comment.

Iranian state media reported the comments by Brigadier General Masoud Jazayeri Saturday.

General Jazayeri says unrestrained greed of the United States and Zionism are pushing the world to "the edge of a precipice."

He warned, in the case of an attack, "fake and artificial regimes" would be the first to be eliminated.

Iran and the United States have been at odds over Iran's nuclear program. Iran says its atomic program is for peaceful purposes but the U.S. and its allies accuse Iran of working to develop a nuclear weapon.

Israel has said a nuclear-armed Iran could threaten its existence. The Israeli air force carried out a large-scale exercise in June that was interpreted by many as a rehearsal for a possible attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

The United Nations has also sanctioned Iran three times because of its failure to comply with Security Council orders to halt uranium enrichment.

Highly enriched uranium can be used to make nuclear weapons.

Deputy Foreign Minister Ali Reza Sheik Attar told Iranian state media Friday the country now has 4,000 working nuclear centrifuges. He also said another 3,000 centrifuges will soon be installed at Iran's main nuclear site in Natanz.

The centrifuges could significantly boost Iran's ability to produce enriched uranium.

Russia- Our Cold War Enemy Reemerges

24 March 2005: Russia, the full time enemy of the United States for the duration of the cold war, then a supposed ally of the United States for about fifteen years, has resumed the role as an enemy of the United States again. No, this isn’t being spoken of at every kitchen table in America and our missiles are not on high alert awaiting an incoming strike from Russian made ICBM’s. One must have noticed, however, that the Russians have chosen sides with sworn enemies of the United States and are supplying arms, technology and training to those enemies.

One has to wonder why the Russians have chosen this road to certain conflict. What are the reasons for their blatant anti-American behavior recently? Is it bitterness over their collapse as a world power that made America appear as the reigning champion afterwards? Is it for economic reasons? Are there elements of the old communist regime still deeply imbedded in Russian politics and the Kremlin that secretly dream of the destruction of America? Or are they simply fulfilling their destiny?

Russia paved the way for terrorists to obtain nuclear materials through several avenues and methods. The primary acquisition of the materials was due to poor security at their nuclear facilities shortly after they went “belly up” as a super power. Plants with materials left unguarded and essentially unsecured in the open which resulted in thefts of these materials by not only outsiders, but by Russians themselves in the fields of science and technology, the Russian Mafia and most certainly military and intelligence personnel who wished to capitalize on their country’s economical and political demise. On the “black market,” a Russian in possession of a block of plutonium and a capable buyer could indeed become a wealthy man in short order.

It has long been established that suitcase style nuclear devices, uranium and plutonium as well as missiles themselves have been stolen from Russian facilities and redistributed to the highest bidders worldwide through the black market over the years. Most of these items were acquired by terrorist regimes, rogue states and terrorists themselves. Russian scientists have disappeared from the face of the earth not because of foul play, but instead because they have sold their services, knowledge and technology to the highest bidders. These scientist and technology types are not limited to the nuclear field of expertise but also include experts in biological and chemical weaponry as well. This very same type of corruption is also occurring in Pakistan as they have had their share of scientists and technicians sell out to terrorists and terrorist regimes worldwide.

Russia has openly supported Iran in their pursuit of nuclear technology, much to the chagrin of the western world. They provided technology for the construction of the nuclear facilities in Iran; according to intelligence reports, they have provided the process technologies for enriching uranium and are currently training over 1000 Iranians to make these facilities fully operational by next year. The world, especially the United States has officially placed Iran on notice for their nuclear activities, yet Russia has completely disregarded the wishes of the U.S. and her allies and continues to supply and assist Tehran in their nuclear endeavors. These are not the actions of an ally or even a fair weather friend. Russia has chosen sides, and it is not the side of the United States.

This issue cannot be ignored much longer as it is only paving the way to disaster. There are many tensions in the region and Israel is the most likely target of Iran in the near future. Turkey is indicating a loosely worded alliance with Syria, who is already aligned with Iran, a significant perpetuator of all radical Islamic terrorist activities. When you throw Russia and their whorish attitude and still available nuclear capabilities into the mix, the potential outcome is deadly. This is an issue that will not stay on the back burner for very long as it is already slowly emerging to the forefront as a threat to the stability of that region. The problems and potential for irreversible deadly actions is immense and in my opinion, from a threat priority standpoint, far outweigh any immediate threat that North Korea poses to the U.S.

Granted, what is happening in North Korea now is dangerous and must be addressed. What is happening in that particular region that currently encompasses Syria, Iran, Turkey and Russia is a much greater threat to the United States and the western world as this region and the alliances forming within will be at the forefront of the next major world conflict.

Someday, everyone will understand why it was critical to remove Saddam Hussein and have a US presence directly adjacent to this cast of deadly characters.

SOCHI, August 15 (RIA Novosti) - Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said on Friday he has no doubt that a planned U.S. missile defense shield for Central Europe is aimed against Russia, but Moscow is ready to continue talks with all parties concerned.

"The deployment of new missile-defense elements in Europe has the Russian Federation as its aim," Medvedev said at a press conference with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in the Black Sea resort town of Sochi.

The United States and Poland signed an agreement on Thursday to deploy 10 U.S. interceptor missiles in the former Communist-bloc country.

Russian officials earlier said Moscow could deploy its Iskander tactical missiles and strategic bombers in Belarus and Russia's westernmost exclave of Kaliningrad if Washington succeeded in its missile shield plans in Europe. Moscow also warned it could target its missiles on Poland.

The Russian Defence Ministry denied the report and said it had no plans to open any military bases abroad, but a top U.S. general was drawn to say such a move would cross a "red line".
Moscow was the Caribbean island's key oil, arms and grain supplier for 30 years, until subsidies propping up the economy of Fidel Castro's revolutionary government fell to a trickle and then dried up entirely after the collapse of the Soviet Union.

"We need to reestablish positions on Cuba and in other countries," news agency Interfax quoted Putin as saying at the weekly presidium meeting of key government ministers.
Just 144 km (90 miles) from the coast of U.S. state of Florida, Cuba still has no formal diplomatic ties with Washington D.C.

US general warns Russia on nuclear bombers in Cuba

Russia would cross "a red line for the United States of America" if it were to base nuclear capable bombers in Cuba, a top US air force officer warned on Tuesday.

"If they did I think we should stand strong and indicate that is something that crosses a threshold, crosses a red line for the United States of America," said General Norton Schwartz, nominated to be the air force's chief of staff.

He was referring to a Russian news report that said the military is thinking of flying long-range bombers to Cuba on a regular basis.

It was unclear from the report whether that would involve permanent basing of nuclear bombers in Cuba, or just use of the island as a refueling stop.

In his confirmation hearing to become the air force's chief of staff, Schwartz was asked what he would recommend if Russia were to base nuclear capable bombers in Cuba.

"I would certainly offer the best military advice that we engage the Russians not to pursue that approach," he said.

US, UK, France launch sea exercise for naval blockade on Iran

DEBKAfile’s military sources report that Operational Brimstone, starting Monday, July 21, aimed at giving military teeth to the two-week ultimatum the six world powers gave Iran in Geneva Saturday to accept the suspension of uranium enrichment or face harsh sanctions and isolation.

After warning of punitive measures against Iran, Condoleezza Rice met the six members of the Gulf Cooperation Council plus Egypt, Jordan and Iraq in Abu Dhabi. First she was briefed by Under Secretary of State William Burns.

The penalty of withholding refined oil products from Iran would be exercised by means of a partial international naval blockade of its Gulf ports.

Taking part in the 10-day exercise in the Atlantic Ocean are more than a dozen ships, including the US carrier strike group Theodore Roosevelt and expeditionary strike group Iwo Jima; the French submarine Amethyste, and the British HMS Illustrious Carrier Strike Group, as well as a Brazilian frigate.

Six vessels from the Norfolk Naval State will play the role of “enemy” forces.

About 15,000 sailors will be involved in Operation Brimstone. Both the Roosevelt and Iwo Jima will be deployed in the Middle East in the coming months.

The exercise is scheduled to end July 31, two days before the US-European ultimatum to Iran expires. Immediately after the Geneva talks ended in failure, the US State Department issued a statement giving Tehran the option of “cooperation or confrontation.”

A partial blockade of Iran’s shores, a key element of the new sanctions, would be limited to withholding from Iran supplies of benzene and other refined oil products - not foodstuffs or other commodities. Short of refining capacity, Iran has to import 40 percent of its benzene consumption and will be forced to react to the stoppage.

Operation Brimstone boasts two striking features:

1. It will include for the first time units of the US Navy Expeditionary Combat Command, who are trained to operate in shallow coastal waters and rivers, such as the coastal waters of the Persian Gulf and the small islands around its chokepoint, the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian Revolutionary Guards marine units are posted on these islands.

In response, the six gave Iran two weeks to respond to their demand, setting the stage for a new round of U.N. sanctions.

Iran's refusal to consider suspending enrichment was an indirect slap at the United States, which had sent Undersecretary of State William Burns to the talks in hopes the first-time American presence would encourage Tehran into making concessions.

Officials and diplomats refused to characterize the timeframe as an ultimatum, but it appeared clear that Iran now has a de-facto deadline to show flexibility.
