Million Georgians Rally Against Russian 'Aggression'

TBILISI -- More than a million Georgians across the former Soviet republic have protested against Russian military action and the Kremlin's backing for the country's two separatist regions.

Many waving the red-and-white Georgian flag, protesters linked arms in the capital Tbilisi in a "human chain" that snaked through the city under cloudy skies.

Flags flew from balconies and protesters chanted "Long Live Georgia!" and "Stop Russia!"

Countrywide, police said over 1 million people took part in what authorities said was a show of unity after Russia this month crushed a Georgian bid to retake breakaway South Ossetia from pro-Moscow separatists.

The figure, which could not be independently confirmed, would account for more than a fifth of the Black Sea state's population of 4.5 million.

"Today we can say that Georgia is not alone, because the whole world is standing beside us," President Mikheil Saakashvili told the crowd on Tbilisi's Freedom Square.

Moscow poured tanks and troops across its southern border to repel the Georgian assault ordered by Saakashvili, and last week recognized South Ossetia and a second breakaway region, Abkhazia, as independent states.

The protest coincided with a meeting in Brussels of European Union leaders, who were expected to announce a review of ties with Moscow but stop short of concrete punishment.

'Day Of Unity'

"This brutal power decided that the revival of Russian imperialism would start in Georgia, but I would like to tell them [Russia] that this revival will be buried for good in Georgia," Saakashvili said.

He said the protest marked the largest gathering in Georgia since the South Caucasus country of split from the Soviet Union in 1991.

Opposition leaders in Georgia have been reluctant to criticize Saakashvili for fear of being branded traitors in a time of war. But they have promised to ask tough questions of his leadership once peace returns.

"It's a day of unity," said artist Natela Zarandia. "We want to show the entire world that Georgians are not afraid of anything, and I hope the world will hear our message."

Russia has withdrawn most of its forces in line with a French-brokered cease-fire deal, but has kept soldiers and equipment in "security zones" outside South Ossetia and Abkhazia that Moscow says are designed to prevent further Georgian aggression.

Hundreds of people died and tens of thousands were displaced in the brief war, which erupted on August 7-8. Georgia alleges that militias acting under the wing of the Russian military have torched Georgian villages and killed civilians.

"The result of Russia's aggression against Georgia is our unification," musician Achiko Guledani, 34, said, standing in line holding hands with members of his band.

"Georgia was never as strong as it is now, and that's why we'll win," he said.

Army Radio reported that the Delaware senator was heard saying in closed conversations with Jerusalem officials three years ago that he was firmly opposed to an attack on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Biden, the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, reportedly claimed that Israel would likely have to come to terms with a nuclear Iran. He reportedly expressed doubt over the effectiveness of economic sanctions imposed on the Islamic Republic and said he was against the opening of an additional military and diplomatic front, saying that the US had more pressing problems, such as North Korea and Iraq.

It is no secret that according to Russian defectors that espionage against the USA has increased after the staged collapse of the Soviet Union, not decreased. Ever since McCain picked Palin, I have been saying that it was because of her experience and readiness towards the Russian threat to the Alaskan region. Russia is only 55 miles from Alaska and Russian PM, Putin re-started the nuclear bomber flights a year ago in the Arctic, the Atlantic and the Pacific for one reason. He is our REAL ENEMY along with radical Islam. Putin in fact is their enabler (Iran, Syria and Al Qaeda) and this little secret is slowly making it's way to the public.



McCain knows the Russian threat very well and the Russians are afraid of him. The Russian media has been bashing McCain heavily the past few months, because they are trying to show him and the USA as a grave threat to Russia.



McCain witnessed the Russian KGB torturing American POW's in Vietnam and approximately 200 Americans were taken to Russia for human experimentation and according to reports by other former POW's. Putin claims that the USA and Bush started this Georgian conflict? Well, why did Putin re-start the nuclear bomber flights LAST YEAR if that was the case? It is conceivable that some people will think John McCain picked Sarah Palin to be his running mate because she is a woman. I know you find this shocking, but I swear I have heard it mentioned.

McCain does not believe in pandering to identity politics. He was looking for someone who was well prepared to fight against international Islamic extremism, the transcendent issue of our time. And in the end he decided that in good conscience, he was not going to settle for anyone who had not been commander of a state national guard for at least a year and a half. He put down his foot!

The obvious choice was Palin, the governor of Alaska, whose guard stands as our last best defense against possible attack by the resurgent Russian menace across the Bering Strait.

Also a woman, but that’s totally beside the point.

True, the only nonfamily members other than McCain that Palin really mentioned in her introductory speech were Democrats Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Whatever happened to Ronald Reagan? Isn’t there a rule that you have to mention Ronald Reagan?
