(CBS/AP) The current head of the European Union presidency on Wednesday warned that the U.S. economic rescue plans were, "a way to hell."

Czech Prime Minister Mirek Topolanek told the European parliament in Strasbourg that the Obama administration's stimulus package and financial bailout risked undermining the stability of the global financial market.

"The U.S. Treasury Secretary, talks about permanent action and we, at our spring council, were quite alarmed by that. He talks about an extensive U.S. stimulus campaign. All of these steps, their combination and their permanency is a way to hell.

"We need to read history books and revisit the lessons taught by history," Topolanek said, taking the E.U. presidency on a collision course with Washington over the economic options to solve the world economic crisis.

Eastern European countries gave an apocalyptic warning yesterday of hordes of unemployed workers heading west as a new Iron Curtain divides rich from poor inside Europe.

Twenty years after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Western leaders were told yesterday that five million jobs could be lost in the “new” European Union countries of the East unless radical action were taken to bail them out.

The spectacular collapse of some of the post-communist tiger economies led to demands at an EU summit in Brussels for a rescue fund of €190 billion (£170 billion) to stop social collapse in the Eastern nations spilling over into the rest of Europe.

The plea, led by Hungary, was rejected in a bad-tempered meeting of the 27 European leaders, dominated by fears that Western EU countries would rather prop up their own large industries and jobs at the expense of the East.

BRUSSELS – The European Union has turned into an undemocratic and elitist project comparable to the Communist dictatorships of eastern Europe that forbade alternative thinking, Czech President Vaclav Klaus told the European Parliament on Thursday.

Klaus, whose country now holds the rotating EU presidency, set out a scathing attack on the EU project and its institutions, provoking boos from many lawmakers, some of whom walked out, but applause from nationalists and other anti-EU legislators.

Klaus is known for deep skepticism of the EU and has refused to fly the EU flag over his official seat in Prague during the Czech presidency, saying the country is not an EU province.

He said current EU practices smacked of communist times when the Soviet Union controlled much of eastern Europe, including the Czech Republic and when dissent or even discussions were not tolerated.

"Not so long ago, in our part of Europe we lived in a political system that permitted no alternatives and therefore also no parliamentary opposition," said Klaus. "We learned the bitter lesson that with no opposition, there is no freedom."

He said the 27-nation bloc should concentrate on offering prosperity to Europeans, rather than closer political union, and scrap a stalled EU reform treaty that Irish voters have already rejected.

Klaus said that questioning deeper integration has become an "uncriticizable assumption that there is only one possible and correct future of the European integration."

France Bows Down to Russia

The European Union's French presidency has said the bloc is in a position to relaunch Partnership and Cooperation Treaty talks with Moscow that were broken off in the wake of the war between Russia and Georgia.

The announcement by French President Nicolas Sarkozy that Russia has complied with EU demands in Georgia stunned some Eastern European leaders who were in Brussels for an EU crisis summit on the global economy.

The talks are now all but certain to resume on November 14 when the EU and Russia meet for a summit in the French city of Nice.

Medvedev - NATO Can Not Protect Europe

Russia's goal is to dismantle NATO, so the USA is isolated even further before the World War starts. Medvedev already said that NATO can not protect Europe (another threat) and that the USA is the cause of the global economic crisis. The Russians have stepped up the anti-American propaganda the past 2 years and here is more of their rhetoric. The fact is that Russia is a grave threat to the EU and the USA. If you do not denounce the USA and kiss the Russian ring, you instantly have a Muslim terror threat.

The Czech Republic received an Al Qaeda threat last year and it is because they are cooperating with the USA's missile defense program that Russia is against. Do you see how this works?

No current European group can solve security problems - Medvedev

KHANTY-MANSIISK, June 27 (RIA Novosti) - None of the current European organizations, including the OSCE, the EU and NATO, is capable of solving Europe's security problems, the Russian president said Friday.

"None of these organizations can solve these problems completely," Dmitry Medvedev told journalists after a Russia-EU summit held in West Siberian city of Khanty-Mansiisk.

"It is obvious that common European security is inseparable. It must not disintegrate into separate blocs and unions and be provided by a few countries, since we speak about the security of the whole European continent," the Russian president said.

Medvedev also said NATO is the most powerful military and political bloc.

"But for obvious reasons it [NATO] cannot guarantee security because not all countries are members. Therefore, this organization is not universal," he said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, who also attended the summit, said afterward that European officials were interested in Russia proposals for a common European security agreement.

"They were inspired by discussions and ideas voiced by the Russian president in Berlin," Lavrov said. "They were genuinely interested in the initiative to work out an agreement on the common European security and to hold a summit on the issue."

On an official visit to Germany in early June, President Medvedev called for a legally binding European security treaty to be signed at a pan-European conference.

Medvedev said a new security arrangement should be based on "pure" national interests, not skewed by ideological motives. He added that "organizations operating in the Euro-Atlantic region" could also join it.
