U.S. court sentences Russian arms smuggler to 22 years in prison

NEW YORK, March 7 (RIA Novosti) - An Armenian involved in smuggling Russian military arms to the United States has been given a 22-year sentence, the United States Attorney's Office for the Southern District of New York said in a press release.

Artur Solomonyan, 30, and another 17 members of his international criminal group held talks for about a year with an FBI agent, who posed as a "terrorist", on the sale of Russian-made grenade launchers, machine guns and portable surface-to-air missile systems.

Solomonyan and his accomplices were arrested as soon as the Federal Bureau of Investigation collected enough evidence to charge them with conspiring to smuggle arms.

The group's arrest in 2005 was widely covered by American media. According to an FBI representative's statement at the time, Solomonyan even offered the "terrorist" enriched uranium to make an attack on the New York City Subway. However, the verdict does not mention uranium.

The sentence to another two accomplices will be made public later in March, while the other group members were sentenced earlier.

BLACKSBURG, Va. (Jan. 21) — A graduate student from China was decapitated with a kitchen knife in a campus cafe at Virginia Tech by another graduate student who knew her, police said Thursday.
Xin Yang, 22, was killed Wednesday night after arriving at the campus from Beijing on Jan. 8 to begin studying accounting, Virginia Tech Police Chief Wendell Flinchum said.

Her accused attacker, 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu of Ningbo, China, knew the victim but no motive for the slaying has been determined, Flinchum said. School records showed that Haiyang was listed as one of Xin's emergency contacts.

Haiyang was charged with first-degree murder and was being held without bond at the Montgomery County Jail. It was not immediately known if he had an attorney.
Haiyang and Xin had been having coffee in a cafe in the Graduate Life Center, where Xin was living. About seven other people who were in the coffee shop told police that the two hadn't been arguing before the attack.

Police received two 911 calls shortly after 7 p.m. Wednesday, Flinchum said, and were on the
scene in a little more than a minute to take Haiyang into custody.

Venezuela Murders Shoot Up 10% Amid Official Silence

CARACAS -- Venezuela's unenviable reputation for violent crime looks easy to prove but difficult to explain, as does the government's apparent inability to do much in terms of reining in murderous thugs with evidently all too easy access to firearms.

In the absence of official statistics, Provea, a civil rights group, says that 10,606 people died by violent means in the 12 months ending in September this year. That marked a 10.86% jump on the already high figure of 9,567 killings in the corresponding period a year before.

Provea is estimating that on current trends the full year will end with more than 13,000 murders. No wonder that crime repeatedly comes top in one opinion poll after another. And yet, people seem curiously inured to the relentless slaughter.

Journalist Shot Dead by Russian Cops

(Newser) – A Russian journalist known for his opposition views was fatally shot in the head after his arrest at an airport yesterday, reports the New York Tiimes. He was shot as he sat in a police car on his way to interrogation, according to officials. Authorities labeled the death of Magomed Yevloyev accidental and are opening an investigation. But human rights advocates called the shooting suspicious and expressed concern about a new era of crackdowns on dissent in Russia.

Yevloyev was arrested and killed in Ingushetia, an area in the North Caucasus near the border with Georgia. In recent days violence has spiked in the region. This weekend, a local government minister survived a bomb attack and two policemen were killed. Yevloyev was one of the few independent journalists in Ingushetia. Readers first followed his work on his own website, and later, when it was censored, on their cell phones.

Mother of Groom Stabbed in Face at Wedding

VENTURA, Calif. — A wedding reception brawl in Ventura involving more than 100 people has left three men facing charges and the mother of the groom with a knife wound.


Ventura police say several people still were fighting when officers arrived late Saturday night at the Knights of Columbus Hall on Figueroa Street.


It took about 15 officers to disperse the crowd. Several officers suffered minor cuts and bruises.
The mother of the groom, fifty-two-year-old Delphina Hernandez, was taken to a hospital with a knife cut to her face.


Arrested on suspicion of fighting in public and resisting arrest were Joe Martinez, 34, of Santa Paula; and Jonathan Sanchez, 19, and Max Ledesma, 18, both of Ventura.
